This October, Parliament will be debating Canada’s first federal bill to restrict food and beverage marketing to children. This will be an important foundational step in helping to counter the disproportionate power of Big Food–and create a healthier and more sustainable food system.
Evidence indicates junk food marketing to kids has been a significant driver of food preferences, transforming societal food culture away from traditional, wholesome food, and towards super-processed foods. The Chief Medical Officer of the First Nations Health Authority, Dr. Evan Adams, from the Sliammon First Nation near Powell River, British Columbia, has observed that banning food and beverage marketing to kids is an important move to help “decolonize” the food system.
